The Eagle: the autobiography of Santa Anna / Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna; Edited by AnnFears Crawford - Austin, Tex. : State House Press, 1988. - xix, 299 p. : ill. ; 24 cm.
Reprint. Originally published: Austin : Pemberton Press, 1967. Includes index.
Conceited, pompous, sometimes arrogant, but always highly entertaining and vividly reminiscent, this autobiography of the self styled " Napoleon of the West " is a landmark contribution to the history of both the United States and Mexico. Santa Anna certainly ranks as the most historically influential figure in all of Mexican history since her independence. He is quite possibly the most important foreigner in U.S. history during the nineteenth century, since his blunders are almost directly responsible for the American acquisition of over one third of her territory. The life of Santa Anna taken from his original handwritten memoirs and from face to face interviews with his grandson and namesake conducted by Jaime S. Platon during the 1960's.
