Tidewater Virginia is a triangle of land that is referred to as "The Cradle of the Republic". In it was made the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown in 1607. In Tidewater assembled the first truly representative legislative body on the continent. Here was erected the first church; here white men first exercised the right of suffrage, slavery was first introduced, the first free school was operated and trial by jury was first given the people.
