French, William frey50
Some recollections of a western ranchman: New Mexico, 1883-1899 / William French - London, England Methuen & Co. LTD. 1927 - 283 p.
Handwritten note to Mrs. Springer by author on flyleaf.
Leaving Ireland in search of fortune in 1883 led Mr. French first to New York, then across America to California. He weighed the respective merits of California and New Mexico, California being favored; he spun a coin in the air and it came down New Mexico, where he decided to settle. He quickly learned about western etiquette; never refuse an offered drink, and about cattle; roping and branding. He soon is a cattle owner, buying them as well as finding them on the range. Soon shedding the label tenderfoot, he quickly learns about Indian attacks, finding and range-branding wild cattle, and breaking wild horses. In 1899 he and a partner bought a tract of land for cultivation and raising alfalfa for cattle feed. After the murder of his friend, he left New Mexico country and settled in Colorado Springs,CO.
