In Hangin’ Pards, it sure seemed that Holt Deaver had just about the worst luck of anyone in the West. At the age of twenty-five he was dead broke and on the run. He had shot one man in Chloride and had killed two others in less than a week. So when an old, whiskery, murdering no-good offered Holt ten thousand bucks to side him, it looked like a good thing. It was at least a chance for the best of everything if the gamble paid off—horses, food, liquor, and women. It also meant a partnership with a wanted outlaw and a self-conviction for Holt.
