In the spring of 1908, Jess Stone discovers the track of an enormous deer, and with the eagerness and rashness of youth, is quick to pursue the trail. It is a trail that is to lead the 15-year old son of New Mexico settlers across a picturesque turn-of-the-century landscape, and through the hills and valleys of calamity, disappointment, responsibility, young love and ultimately, to the very threshold of manhood.
