Summary, etc |
C.R. Dodwell believes that we can understand the art of Anglo-Saxon England only by looking at contemporary comments on it. Taking this innovative approach, he brings to light some remarkable details on the nature of objects that were made from about the seventh to the twelfth centuries. From the evidence in literary documents we learn of human-sized statues of gold and silver; the extensive use of gold-work in wall paintings, embroideries, and garments; an interest in exotic imported silks; and a tradition of epic tapestries. |
