Summary, etc |
"Ever since a military post was established at Rayado soldiers took advantage of week end leaves to dig for gold in the vicinity of what later became Baldy mining camps. Even before the soldiers, native New Mexicans made unsuccessful attempts to unearth mineral treasures hidden in the earth. It was soldiers from Fort Union who found gold in Willow Creek and soldiers who climbed Mt. Baldy to dig holes in the ground, much to the amusement of the Jicarillas and Utes who found more enjoyment in a buffalo hunt than in picking up the nuggets found in the various streams of the area."--From page 2 |
