Helen Blumenschein was born on November 21, 1909 in Brooklyn, New York. Her family split their time between New York and Taos, she attended Packer Collegiate Institute, from 1929 to 1931 she studied art in Europe taking some lessons from Modernist painter, Andre Lhote, in Paris. From 1932 to 1936 she spent part of each year studying printmaking at the Art Students League in New York. She passed away on September 9, 1989 in Taos, New Mexico.
