Fremont Ellis was born on October 2, 1897 in Virginia City Montana. He grew up without a formal education and with exception of three months spent studying at the Art Students League in New York City her remand a self-taught artist. After trying his hand at optometry, he became a full-time painter. He became a resident of Santa Fe New Mexico in 1920 and passed away on January 12, 1985 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
