Eveline was born February 28, 1843, in Utica, New York, the fourth child of Enos Throop Thompson Martin and Cornelia Williams. The Martin Girls visited Silver Springs and were introduced to Washington society under the Blairs' sponsorship. It was through this close family friendship the Evy met her future husband, Andrew Jonathan Alexander. On November 3, 1864, the two were married in the Sand Beach church near Willowbrook. In 1866 Alexander was ordered to New Mexico for duty with the Third Cavalry, and it was in conjunction with this phase of their army sevice that Eveline began her journal. In 1867 the Alexanders left New Mexico and after a short visit to Willowbrook, proceeded to Washington. By January, 1868 the Alexanders were again on their way west, this time to the newly established Fort McDowell in McDowell, Arizona.
