The 17 year old author takes us along the Santa Fe Trail, on a buffalo hunt, to the bastions of Bent's Old Fort, into Cheyenne tepees and ranchos, and into Taos during the year of 1846 - 1847. He hunted buffalo, danced and traded with Indians, volunteered in the Mexican war, and fought Comanches. He meets many leading men during his year in the West, and portrays the lives of the trappers, traders, soldiers, Mexicans, and Indians he meets.
