At 5:12 a.m. on the morning of April 18, 1906, San Francisco waited for the coming of another bustling day. Two minutes later the city was the scene of carnage, streets uptorn, houses crumpled, water mains burst, gas and electricity cut off. An earthquake, striking in two giant tremors, began an epic of destruction. What the earthquake started, fire finished and a city was laid to waste. This book recreates the hour-by-hour suspense of three days that left a quarter of a million people homeless. But the rebuilding began even as the ashes were still smoldering.
