The story of oil in New Mexico fits into the period of the industrialization of America. Despite the relatively modern nature of the industry, it maintained, in its early days, an element of romance smackin gof mining camps or railroad towns. Towns boomed and died as the ebb and flow of drilling moved across the landscape. A raucous crowd of workers, hangers-on, speculators, con men, scientists and oilmen came and went with each successive wave of activity. It was exciting, dramatic and productive.
