Forword by John Lowell Pratt (New York, NY, February 22, 1968)
Currier & Ives are names synonymous with 19th century Americana. In an era that lacked pictorial journalistic coverage, Currier & Ives prints of American life provided exciting visual communication. Photography was just in its infancy and offered no competition. In selecting the prints for this book, the editor was guided by the life of the times. The result is a pictorial, colorful, chronological story of this country, virtually to the end of the 19th century. From the approximate 6,000 prints made of paintings by great artists, 220 color prints have been carefully chosen for this volume.
