Jonathan M. Wainwright, an inconspicuous Army devision commander in 1941, has become a symbol of American steadfastness and courage. His story is well known but his own version of the tragic days on Bataan and Corregidor, the year of captivity and suffering, the final victory and the high honors heaped on him by a greatful people, has a more than eyewitness intensity.
