Writing attached to photograph at bottom reads: "Born in Cimarron, NM Jan 23 1887. At age of 16 appointed Deputy Sheriff, Colfax County, Territory of New Mexico. Age 21 appointed New Mex. Mounted Police, Territory of N.M. For several years held position of U. S. D. Special Officer. Cattle Inspector for State of New Mexico, an dserved in other State Commissions also. In all about 35 years of Official Service." The writing on the back reads "XL horse brand of Kit Carson", which appears to have nothing to do with the photograph. The top of the photograph trimmed, with the sides lower than the top.
