A novel of the siege of Vicksburg.
May 1863. After months of bitter combat, Union troops under Major General Ulysses S. Grant at last successfully cross the Mississippi River, forcing the remanats of the Confederate lieutenant general John. C. Pemberton's army to retreat to Vicksburg. But after sustaining heavy losses, Union troops are losing confidence. Grant reluctantly decides to lay seige to the city.
