Not quite twenty-one, Lt. George Douglas Brewerton was ordered to accompany Kit Carson and his dispatch-bearing party as far east as Independence, Missouri; then head south to Mississippi and report for duty with the First United States Infantry. It was the beginning of a muleback ride into history that presents a rare and authentic view of frontier New mexico as seen by a young Yankee soldier.
