Like Dr. Johnson, Wellington possessed qualities which are often thought to be peculiarly English. In India he won a series of unparalleled military victories; in the Peninsular War he drove the French armies out of Portugal into Spain, from Spain into France, and was only prevented from pressing them back to the loire by Napoleon's abdication.
