Carl Rister chronicles an intense historical period of the southwestern frontier. The influx of settlers not only brought outlaws, but created clashes with the Indians which were dealt with by the United States army and calvary. Eventually the railways came through, bringing more settlers west. It was an exciting and dangerous period that finally ended as the country became settled by settlers from the east and the frontier vanished.
