Ms. Schmidt covers the history of Raton from the first camping of soldiers in the area to 1930. Her introduction includes '. . .this is a review of a book written by my brother Jay Conway in 1930 entitled "A Brief Community History of Raton 1880 - 1930 Interpretive of the Spirit and Atmosphere of the Pioneer Southwest." It includes many 'firsts', including the first baby born in Raton. It also includes an account of the effect the American Railway Union strike in sympathy with the Pullman Strike in 1894 had on Raton.
